What is Palliative Care?
The meaning of the word Palliation is to calm, alleviate, or relieve. Modern medical science has the means to sustain a human being’s life almost endlessly but when such means merely prolong suffering with no hope of revival, Palliative care specialists take over to ensure that the final days of the patient are spent in a comfortable way, preferably at home, with family. Death is inevitable for all of us, but when it comes calling earlier than expected, it can be made free of suffering & pain. Family members are often overwhelmed with the physical, social, psychological & financial challenges & feel the need of a support system which can help them give the best care to their loved one.
Our Supportive Care Model
A terminal illness such as cancer has far reaching effects on the family of the sufferer – physical, emotional, social, and financial. Our Palliative Care Team focusses not only on the patient’s but also on the family’s needs. Our caregivers have been trained in reputed Cancer hospitals of the city to provide the most empathetic and responsive care. We are working closely with Tata Medical Centre, Kolkata, and a few other hospitals, in providing supervised Palliative Care at home for their patients.
Our Team physician visits the patient in Hospital and does a thorough assessment including a discussion with the treating consultant so that the Palliative care goals are known and shared with the family. Once the patient is discharged, our specially trained caregivers transfer the patient home and follow the defined care plan created. Doctors monitor the patient remotely and adjustments are made in medicines and care as per the specialist’s instructions always ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and distress free as possible. Our Homecare nurses are trained in End of Life care and they care for the final moments with empathy and compassion. Our helpline is available round the clock for all assistance including support with the last rites after demise.
Some of our supportive care practices are:
• Home Visit by physician specialised in Palliative Care.
• Psychological & Spiritual counselling.
• Focussing on the patient’s & family’s goals for health & life.
• Helping the family for organ donation (e.g. Eye) if desired.
• Assisting with After life formalities such as medical certification, last rites etc.
If only we knew our expiry date…wouldn’t we all live each day differently?
